I felt this way about piano for a long time. Piano used to define me, but I was led to Art History in college instead. Other activities pushed piano out of the way and I felt like a fraud when I said I was a pianist. Now I teach piano and feel so happy to be immersed in that world again. Although, now I am beginning to feel like a fraud when it comes to Art History as piano pushes that passion to the back seat! I guess there is a time and a place for everything.

I like your question: Do I still have the right to claim dance as my passion when obviously it didn’t win out amongst a myriad of options I had to choose from?

How many things in life become our passion and then recede for us to wonder what became of that part of me. Each time it feels a bit like an identity crises, I think.

But as you say, “I will always be a dancer.”

Lovely thoughts about passion, creativity and how each fit into a life that continues to grow as we do.

That was so moving and beautiful to read, Allysha. I never knew you were a dancer, but I am not at all surprised! One of my biggest regrets/disappointments in life is that I wasn’t a dancer. Dancing was the one thing I always wanted to do and didn’t–even though I probably would have stumbled around like a klutz. I love watching people dance. I think it is one of the most beautiful forms of art.

I love this! It’s so good to see creativity in other mediums, as you say. Lindsey, I think you can also add writing to the list of your creative “mediums.” I loved reading this essay.
